Sergios, stratelates, 6th-7th centuries. Seal (Lead, 20 mm, 5.12 g, 12 h). Cross on steps. Rev. CEP/ΓI૪ CT/PATH... in four lines. Unpublished in the standard references. An interesting seal with extremely rare iconography for the period. Good very fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 32, 9 December 2024, 2885 and previously from an important collection of Roman and Byzantine seals, tesserae and amulets, formed before 2021.


While the stepped cross is well-known from contemporary solidi, it is highly unusual on Byzantine seals.
